First Grade Reading Skills
By the end of the school year students should:
-Make predictions and use prior knowledge
-Understand story elements (characters, setting, plot)
-Use variety of reading strategies to decode words and make meaning
-Recognize high frequency words
-Select books appropriate to reading levels or interest

First Grade Writing Skills
By the end of the school year students should:
-a complete sentence
-use capital letters correctly (I, beginning a sentence, proper names)
-use correct punctuation (.,?,!)
-write a paragraph with a beginning, middle, and end (minimum 3 sentences)
-Prewritten, draft, conference, revise, publish and share writing

First Grade Math Skills
By the end of the school year students should:
-count to 1000 by 1's, 2's, 5's, 10's, and 25's
-count backwards from 20
-write numbers to 100
-continue spatial, color, number, and shape patterns using various materials
-make and read bar graph and pictograph
-tell what +. -, and = symbols mean

First Grade Handwriting Skills
By the end of the school year students should:
-form upper and lower case letters correctly on lined paper
-use correct spacing between letters and words.
